Today’s post is written specifically for those responsible for managing a Group on Facebook. Facebook Groups don’t get as much buzz as Facebook Profiles (soon to be known as Timelines) and Facebook Pages. Still, there are many wonderful uses for Groups. I belong to many, including some business, community or family related.
Serving as an Admin of a Facebook Group can be incredibly easy or a huge time commitment, depending on the size of the group and how closely the group’s content is moderated. There are many considerations in managing a group, but today’s post will focus on just one. More specifically, it will focus on when reasonable efforts to carry out that one task don’t work as they should, resulting in frustration for group members and Admins.
When a group member interacts inappropriately in the group, it is often up to the Group Admin to remove them from the group. What constitutes inappropriate conduct certainly varies from group to group, but may include anything from spamming the group to posting hateful messages. Removing and banning that person from the group should be an easy task, with should being the operative word. It should be only be a matter of finding that person on the list of group members and removing them with a click of the mouse. The problem is that, for some reason, finding the name you’re looking for on the list of members is very often impossible.
If you aren’t able to find their name, it is impossible to remove and ban them from the group. Or, is it? The good news is that there is at least one workaround. It takes a bit of time and you’ll need Google Chrome to make this trick work. If someone is really taking advantage of the group and annoying members with their posts, it just might be worth your time to watch this video to learn how to do this yourself. (If you’re an experienced Group Admin and very comfortable jumping right to the nitty gritty details without much of the context, you might want skip ahead and start watching at around 7:00.)

Are you a Facebook Group Admin? Have any tips which you think would help others?

FUCK YEAAAAAAAAA! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! Seriously Irene, this shit rocks. Being an admin of the same group, there have been many a times I’ve spent 20+ minutes trying to FIND THE FUCKER that keeps posting fake shit. Consequently for you, I would usually just give up and say, “Irene will figure it out.” BAHAHAHA I don’t know why I didn’t think of this work around, but SWEEEEEET! I’ve started playing around with others buttons (like the Poke) and sure enough, it works there too! You Fucking Rock Irene. #YFRI
Uhm, thanks? You do have a way with words, Ryan. 🙂
No more giving up because, “Irene will figure it out.” Now, you know how to do it, too. Spammers should not even think about joining the Social Media Jobs group now; they’ll be removed as soon as they post.
Thanks it works for me, great.
But why this problem exists ? is it bug in FB or every one can hide name in member list search?
I don’t know why the problem exists; probably a glitch in the Facebook group search function. It may be that the user has blocked the admins of the group. I’m happy to hear that this solution worked for you.
Brilliant, thanks Irene.
I knew there had to be a way using the uid number, but as a long running user of firefox, there was no way of editing just the attributes for the ‘X’.
The thing I don’t understand with the group member search feature is why it works fine for non-admins…
If I get my partner (who is also an admin) to remove me as an admin, I can search through all the members on our group alphabetically without problem, page after page all 2,900 members, and all alphabetically.
I can then find the offending member, but have no way of removing them. As soon as I become an admin again, the search goes to pot.
Listing members alphabatically works for the first page, then it goes random and only lists about 200 members then stops.
I have reported the issue with facebook, but like most reports to facebook, nothing ever happens.
At last I can now remove members without problem – I’m a happy bunny 🙂
Hey, Mark. I feel your pain – and frustration with this. This is exactly what drove my determination to figure this out and then spend a lot of time making the video to share the solution/work-around with other group admins.
If I’ve helped you to become a happy-bunny, the work was well worth it! 🙂
Thanks Irene, great tutorial! I based mine off of the info from yours, this can be easily done in Firefox as well.
Well done, Greg. Thanks for sharing.
A very good start! Finding the ID# and seeing the source-code for the X-button works very well in Firefox as well, it’s the ability to modify the source-code on the fly that’s lacking (least without some extension/plug-in).
A question though is how to handle those that has banned the admins on facebook, as their posts and profiles are invisible?
Good question. Did you see Mark’s comment on this post? He shares how he handles this exact situation.
Patrik,
I too have had that problem, the scum bag had blocked all the admins.
I have a spare account I use for such things, I added that account as an admin, then I could see the offensive posts and remove them.
If you don’t have a spare account, just ask a friend if they can see the posts, then add them as an admin, or get them to give you their user ID number.
Even if a person has blocked you, you can still remove them from a group with their user ID.
Hope that helps 🙂
Well, it looks like Facebook has finally listened to complaints.
Since the last complaint I sent to Facebook, all my searches has returned results. I have been able to find everyone I needed to in order to remove them. In addition now, when removing a post, there is an option to remove the post AND the person posting!
I have used this a couple of times now, and it works beautifully 🙂
All they have to do now is resolve the blocking admins thing… but one step at a time I guess lol
Unfortunately it seems to be broken again. Searches aren’t returning anything on my groups.
You can only easily ban if they make a top level post and it requires you delete that post.
Hi, i used your method. unfortunately my spammer is appearing as not a member. i cant seem to get rid of her. she is a scammer on my group. hidden herself from admins. so i admined a friend, he can still see her posts so far. but cant get rid of her arrghhh! but great tip. thankyou ill be using it for the less shifty ones 🙂
I’m sorry this didn’t work for you, Kathy. I was able to use this technique to successfully remove and ban members who had blocked me. Believe me, I know how aggravating this can be!
Hi. ty for your reply… We got her!!! LOL She had blocked me is why i couldn’t do it. Shes gone now. <3
Hooray! Happy to hear it.
Hi Irene,
Thanks but I have another question for you. Today I went to a group I admin and saw people responding to a comment I couldn’t see. Turns out a member blocked me so they could post whatever they want to without the admins seeing! So, how do you detect and instantly ban any members who block you?
Cheers,
Chris
Hi Irene, why dont write the method also here in the post, for who, like me, dont understand speaked English?
Thanks.
Hey can you help me,
How can I add my friend into my FB group whom I banned 🙁 . I want to add him again.
please help me .
OOOHHHHH MMMYYY GOD YOU ARE AAWWEESSOOMMEE!!!!!!!! I had someone running a muck, swearing at everyone calling them out of their name and DUN DUN DUN DUUUNNN IRENE TO THE RESCUE!!!! he’s no longer an issue!!!
I have reason to believe that people are posting comments about me on a group I belong to, but they have blocked me so I can’t see these comments.
I belong to this group, but am not the admin. I also see the group shows 130 members, but when I show the list and count the names I only see 100.
Casey, I suggest that you contact the group admin about this. That is the person who can control the conversation.
Is this still working, I tried it and nothing is happening..
Thank you..
Hi There,
Haven’t had any problems finding the person I want to remove from my organization’s group, but when I click remove, I get the message
“This user is not a member of this group.”
Problem is, they are still listed on the member’s page. The person has been let go from our organization, so I really need to get them off of this group. Anyone out there have this issue? Any fixes? I submitted it to Facebook, but so far no response (not holding my breath.
Thanks so much for your help.

Hello, Pahla. I am very happy to hear that this information was helpful to you. Thanks for letting me know!
So how do we ban if no ip address can be found they blocked all admins and block anyone I make an admin. I have also had non admins search his name and found nothing. This is a huge problem. Normally we get people with a temp admin but they either have a program or are insanely fast at blocking admins.
Thanks, the tutorial is useful
Does this technique still work? Is the a better quality video – I cannot see the text that is being change in the video – it is blurry
